Chatelaines were originally worn at the waist with chains hanging to the knee.  The Bali Sunrise Scarf Chatelaine has brackets at the back so that a narrow belt, ribbon or scarf could tie it to the waist.  I make these a lot for Reenactors.  It is sturdy, has just a few loops, and It works best with a double clasp chain.
