No matter the composition of the fingertip shield, there is still another matter:  How much finger to you want covered?  My thimbles come in many types:   Tailor thimble (no top), Short or tall, straight or tapered.  Japanese Yubinuki (also called a thimble band) historically made from cardstock wrapped with Japanese silk. Finished with intricate knots and stitches.  The New American Thimble Bands are metal and mine are sterling silver.  The band is less than ½ inch wide and NOT tapered.  It should settle onto your fingertip and cover the base of the fingernail.   Open Nail Thimbles are my top seller.  There is an opening for the fingernail to come through, making it more secure and comfortable.  They can have a quilt rim (or not). They can have a larger or smaller opening to fit your wide or narrow fingernails.  There is ALWAYS a nail guard to stop the needle from jamming up under your fingernail.  Some nail guards are curvy and some are flat.  There are deep (open nail) thimbles for a meatier fingertip and tapered (open nail) thimbles for a more pointed fingertip.  Open Nail thimbles can be tall or short, round or oval or even a bit square at the knuckle end.  Traditional Closed Top thimbles are all round at the knuckle, and round at the top.  I can oval them a bit at the open bottom, BUT not as much as the open nail thimble.  While a good fitting open nail thimble is nothing but metal and finger, there will always be a bubble of air at the top of the closed top thimbles.  This air pillow insulates your fingertip from the feeling of the needle touch.  Making it harder to get an accurate stitch.   Finding Your Fit A thimble that doesn't fit hinders more than it helps. My thimbles come in standard American Ring sizes, measured where my thimble first goes all the way around the fingertip.  Most of my thimbles are not level at the lowest edge, but cut out around the knuckle for comfort.   My sterling silver thimbles are a bit more adjustable than stainless steel, or even silicone.
